Conical burr vs. flat blade coffee grinders

We personally prefer coffee grinders with conical burrs instead of flat blades. A grinder with rotating flat blades is generally intended for chopping nuts or grinding spices, making it more difficult to grind coffee particles evenly and uniformly. Flat blades also tend to get hot faster, thus warming up the coffee grounds and releasing the coffee’s aromas and flavors even before you start brewing. Conical burrs crush the coffee beans evenly and heat up very minimally. They also stay sharp and last longer than flat blades. That’s why we find conical burrs better for grinding coffee than flat burrs. 

Coffee hand grinder vs. electric coffee grinder

The main advantage of a coffee hand grinder is that you can easily operate it without any electricity. This makes hand grinders ideal for taking on vacations and less prone to operational issues. You can easily grind small quantities of coffee with a hand grinder, for brewing up to around half a liter of coffee. 

On the other hand, the main advantage of an electric coffee grinder is being able to grind larger quantities of coffee beans quickly, without the workout. Some electric coffee grinders have an on-demand function with a portafilter holder attachment that can be used with your espresso machine. Other electric coffee grinders are designed to be extra quiet while grinding on those early mornings.
