Bogale Dayoso has been a specialty coffee farmer for over two decades, supporting his family of seven children with the income generated on his three-hectare farm called Calba in the heart of Yirgacheffe. All of this is done without chemicals or fertilizers but instead with traditional agricultural practices of careful mulching, pruning, and composting to preserve the health of the land.
We sourced this coffee through our importer, Sucafina, which initiated the Lalissa project in Ethiopia to reward smallholder farmers for high quality coffee, namely through premium prices, financing options, and farm management consultations.
Many farms in Ethiopia are, in fact, family gardens that are only 0.5-1 hectare in size. That’s why most coffee from Ethiopia is a community lot with coffees blended from hundreds of farmers that deliver their crops to the local washing station. It is rare to find single-farm coffees from Ethiopia that can be traced back to one farmer.
